French Lake is a 121-acre lake near Grand Marais with mostly deep, open water reaching 130 feet maximum depth. The small, sheltered lake offers two campsites and connects by open water to Fern and Seahorse Lakes. Access is easiest via the 11-rod portage to Fern, though paddlers can reach Gillis, Powell, and Peter Lakes through longer portages ranging from 18 to 122 rods.
