Basswood (Canada) Lake

Basswood is a massive 14,071-acre lake near Ely with depths reaching 111 feet. This large, open lake is highly exposed to wind and can leave paddlers windbound during storms. Access is via the easy 31-rod Sucker portage, or longer carries to Good (69 rods), Azion (74 rods), Newton (85 rods), Indiana (97 rods), and Manomin (105 rods). The lake holds 124 campsites and connects by open water to Basswood River, Manomin, Wind, Indiana, Muskeg, and Newton lakes, offering excellent fishing for walleye, pike, smallmouth and largemouth bass, and panfish.
