Insula is a large, deep lake of 2,840 acres near Ely with fairly open conditions that can get windy and choppy. It has 40 campsites and connects directly by open water to Hudson, Cache, Tornado, Alice, and Carol. Access is via a 17-rod easy portage, with further portages to Carol (45 rods, easy), Hudson (95 rods), and Kiana (164 rods, hard). The lake's maximum depth reaches 63 feet.
