Trip Overview

This 35-mile loop departs from Entry Point #1 on East Vermilion and winds through a diverse chain of lakes ranging from vast Trout Lake to hidden gems like Otter and Buck. The route front-loads its toughest mileage and portage work in the first two days, then rewards paddlers with relaxed, scenic days through Chad and Pine Lakes on the back half. With 15 portages and a mix of open crossings and sheltered bays, this trip suits intermediate canoeists seeking both challenge and solitude in the northeastern BWCA.

Fishing Highlights

Trout Lake is the standout fishery on this route, offering one of the most diverse catches in the BWCA including lake trout, walleye, smallmouth bass, and northern pike; Pine Lake also provides solid walleye and smallmouth action and makes an excellent evening fishing camp on Day 4.

Permit Info

Entry Point #1 Trout Lake carries a daily quota of 12 groups, so reserve your permit well in advance through Recreation.gov, especially for summer weekends; your permit is valid only for the entry date and entry point specified.
